Rupert Murdoch, Scientology......plus an interview

Tom Cruise being 'creepy'

Rupert Murdoch has urged people to watch the Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise divorce unfold. Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, Scientology is a cult that veils itself as a religion. Have a read online and I assure you that a cult is just what this organisation is. France has considered banning the group from operating there. An investigating magistrate in an interview with TIME described Scientology as "first and foremost a commercial business" and concluded that Scientology uses bookstores and celebrities to lure gullible and often vulnerable converts "with the goal of seizing their fortune by exerting a psychological hold". TIME.

Rupert Murdoch tweeted that Scientologists are 'creepy and evil'. Ms Holmes "has claimed that her every move has been tracked by a team of mystery men" according to the Daily Mail.

I wanted to get a young persons perspective, so I spoke to a former Scientologist who wished to remain anonymous for obvious reasons.

What level of control were you subjected to on and off site?
"Quite alot, they want to know what your doing, when your doing it, why your doing it, who your with ect.. They always call you and turn up where you live to try to get you to do more courses. They say if you contact someone 3 times about something they get interested, and if you do 5 times they will definitely be interested."

What was the building like that you had to visit?
"Very nice, they spend alot of money on appearances so as they look good"

Are there any distinguishing character traits of a Scientologist?
"Yeh but its hard to explain. A lot of it comes from the training they have to do. the majority are regualr people , but they are very stubborn and very persistant in the way they talk to you."

Were you allowed to be with people of your age group?
"Yeh"

How did you get involved in Scientology?
"A family freind. They have big recruitment drives as well. Once you start doing their courses there's a lot of pressure to join their staff. Its very hard to say no as they are extremely persistant, and dismisive of your reasons not to. They have special training to get people involved."

What were the therapies?
"There's a lot of things that they do. Their main thing you have to do before you can progress is sitting in a sauna for 8 hours per day for weeks. The rest of the things they make you do are mainly courses designed to train people to behave in a certain way. This could involve shouting at an ashtray for a few hours or talking to a wall. One way you advance in Scientology is by being hooked up to a "e-meter" which is essentially a lie detector, and they question you about all your past memories. They keep doing this until the needle on the "e-meter" floats, which means that your not withholding any information from them. All the information you say is written down and kept in a folder about you."

Is it a security risk, when you consider the volume of people involved in Scientology, and if so what should the worlds government's be doing about it?
"Its a security risk in the sense that their ultimate goal is to make everyone on Earth a Scientologist. They call it "clearing the plant". It's more of a risk to people who are in vunerable situations, as they are trained to exploit that.
People are encouraged to do courses that they cant afford, and are told to rent rooms in their house to other members of Scientology to pay for the courses. This is how they trap people. People end up not being able to escape its influence. If that isn't an option for you they they will encourage you to join their staff, where you can do the courses for free as long as you work for them. Once you decide to leave, you end up having to pay them for what you have done. The whole process leaves people who haven't worked a proper job in years, and who are completely out of touch from the real world, tens of thousands of pounds in debt. This will again trap people as they will have nowhere to go. It's all about exploiting people to get money out of them. They are very good at making people feel as though they're wronging Scientology and convincing you that your in the wrong."

Lastly can it really be considered a religion?
"No"
